College & Postsecondary Career Guidance & Vocational Testing

Understanding Learning Style Can Dramatically Improve Academic Achievement

The Center for Psychological Services has had many years of experience helping students reach their maximum potential.
On occasion, students who are in college or even graduate school struggle to achieve academically. In such cases, it is important to determine the reasons, to assess their needs, and to find ways to help them meet with more success.

Sometimes students are unable to achieve because of a previously unrecognized learning weakness or because the advanced academic demands of a college curriculum tax them beyond their abilities or level of preparation.

Other young people cannot balance the social and educational expectations and emphasize one at the expense of the other. Even those students who appear prepared to assume the independence that college life permits sometimes find they are actually ill-equipped for this experience.

The staff of the Center for Psychological Services evaluates the situation and the student. They then make recommendations to implement appropriate changes. This is accomplished in conjunction with college personnel, in order to provide a coherent approach which can satisfy the individual student, the family, and the institution.

The process varies depending on each situation, and can include any or a combination of the following services:

• Consultation
• Review of Records
• Intellectual Evaluation
• Academic Assessment
• Psychological Evaluation
• Career and Vocational Counseling
• Specific Recommendations
• College Accommodations
• Student Support
• Alternative Placements
• In-Service Training
• Seminars
• Workshops

College & Postsecondary Career Guidance & Vocational Testing

These services are designed for both high school seniors and college students preparing for career entry. We also have specialized career guidance and testing for those with learning disabilities.

Focused interviewing and standardized testing with a psychologist delineates an individual's basic aptitudes, vocational interests and preferences, values and personality style as they may impact on job performance and career satisfaction.

Those individuals completing a career guidance program will be more focused in their goals and objectives. They will receive the following tools to help achieve these goals:

• A focused career "action plan"

• Resume and cover letters as effective marketing tools

• Awareness of effective job search and "networking" techniques

• Preparation for job interviews

• Printed self-help materials and references for information on career and job search

Peter Kolson, Psy.D., a clinical psychologist, is our coordinator of career services.
